Accident Damaged Cars

I am writing this as i have seen a vast increase in my e-mails about cars being pulled, half repaired, not what was mentioned. So i will give you this simple guide.
Beware. Some of the dealers pull the dents out, repair windscreens, valet them to make them look better than they did. They then want to charge you more than what they got it for at auction. I strongly advise people to go and have a good look around the car before you buy it. Cars can be jigged and you wouldnt know it had been. If the car has had a frontal and the windscreen was broken it was hit hard. You replace the glass, pull it here and there, dispose of some bits then it dont look too bad.
BUY 2 REPAIR.com or AML is a good example. Take a look and see how good they look after an accident... Bear in mind that the car has hit something first (Think about it).
Then goto UNIVERSAL SALVAGE.co.uk and see what cars are like before they get sold....This company deals with most of the leading insurance companies.

Over the years I have owned loads of Minis (real ones). In that time I have built up a list of tips and hints I think will help other Mini owners enjoy and take care of their Mini. I have heard many more but I know all these work! So here goes, in no particular order...
The Marigold ignition soulution.
Want a cheap and effective ignition shield that still allows you access to the surrounding area? Get an old marigold glove, cut the tips off the fingers. Disconnect spark plug 1, feed it through the finger, refit it. Repeat for the other spark plug leads.

DODGY DEALER - STEVENSUBEO

Beware of dodgy dealers such as STEVENSUBEO look him up he looks quite legitimate then when you delve deeper you find that he is a motor dealer who is passing himself of as a private seller. I had a encounter with this dodgy dealer when i bid on a ford ka. The photos all looked good the description was good and described the car down to the last detail. the car was listed as being in manningtree in essex, when i won the car i contacted the seller to arrange to pick the car up, He stated that he would not be available on the following day as he had to go to Southampton as he did recovery work for a Insurance Company ( THE WARNING BELLS SHOULD HAVE RUNG ) anyway we arranged a time to collect the car. Prior to collecting the car we received a call from the seller saying the car was in another location this was in Suffolk anyway we never gave it a second thought and arranged to meet in the village hall car park

BMW 1150GS and GSA Differences and issues.

These are really two different bikes which share many of the same components. The main and most obvious same bits being the engine and the instruments and panel.
The GSA is known as the adventure and was introduced in 2002. The GS was first introduced in 1999.

The things that are different are the wheels, the screen, the tank, the seat, the suspension, the rack(rear of bike), the luggage that will fit and some minor cosmetic panels. The gearbox is often different as well but not always.

The wheels are generally interchangeable and it is largely cosmetic (coloured rims on the later GSA)

The screen on the GS is adjustable easily and can be tilted up and down. The GSA is not adjustable. People spend vast fortunes on trying to get the screens correct for them. There is no one answer. For some people the original screen is fine for others they buy after market screens and muck around endlessly attempting to eliminate buffeting. Helmet shape body height riding position all seem to be factors but what is perfect for one identical twin will not be for another. Try a bike before bidding

The most obvious difference between a GS and GSA is the tank size. The GSA is a lot larger. (33 litres against 22 litres I think). In either case it is a lot of weight to be sloshing around. If you are planning to tour areas where it is 400 miles between petrol stations then go for the GSA. If you are not then unless you are set on an adventure GSA because of the looks then do not worry too much. If you are riding with other bikes they will want to stop and fill up long before a GSA tank is empty but you will have to stop as well - which brings me on to the best piece of advice about a GSA tank is that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FILL IT RIGHT UP. It is also hard to fill the tanks right up unless you drill small holes in the interior neck of the filler to let the air out of the top of the tank simply because of the design. I do not advise doing this unless you have seen what someone else has done

The seat on the GSA is one piece and the GS two pieces. The can be adjusted for height (a little) but BMW and many after market companies supply lower or even higher seats.
The seats are not interchangeable between the two models

GSA luggage will not generally fit a GS and vice versa- the correct racks need to be bought. It is the racks that are the important bits. Metal luggage is often important to that "round the world" image. There are many different sorts and they nearly all cost several hundred pounds. They are worth having on any bike though people do find that they make filtering a little bit harder but after a few minutes you almost forget that they are there. The luggage is often sold separately as it adds little to the value of a bike. Luggage, be it BM's extremely good touring cases(black bulbous plastic) or after market cases fetch good prices on ebay as the are wanted by many people who already own GS's

The gearbox on the 1150 has 6 gears. There are two sorts of gear boxes the most common one is identifiable by the fact that sixth gear is indicated on the gear indicator as an "E" not "6". E is for economy. The 6th gear is slight more relaxed if it is an E box but it is only a few hundred revs difference. The first gear though in the Adventure box (for it most frequently fitted to the GSA) is much lower and useful if you ever want to take the bike off road - though you may have to be a bit of an off road god to get any real use from it.

The suspension on the GSA is higher than the standard GS and if you swapped then you would get a higher ride height. The suspension on the GS and the GSA is quite good but does wear out slowly. Experts, unlike me, reckon it is worn out by 30000 miles. You can get it rebuilt for less than

ZZR600 - guide to buying a great bike

The ZZR600 is an extremely underrated bike. I have had one for about two and half years now after upgrading from a GPZ600R which had served me well. For the price you get such a lot of bike for your money.
Most articles on the ZZR600 will dismiss it as too old to party and far behind todays tackle - it hasn't changed much since 1991 apart from a mid nineties facelift from the D model to the E - also know as ZX600D or ZX600E. Its true that if you want a track focused bike or something just to go mental on Sunday with, you'd be better looking at something more modern. However, if you want a bike you can use every day of the week, commute on and do track days and Sunday blasts on the ZZR is a good choice.
Its a very comfortable bike and is such a nice place to be I have regurlarly done 600 miles days on it touring. Racking up the miles increases the confidence and lean angles, and you'd be amazed the amount of R1s and Fireblades I overtake on the twisties, as the riders just havn't been out on their bikes as much and don't dare push as hard.
As its been around for so long its really cheap to run, most parts are available on ebay all the time, though regulars like oil filters, cables etc I've often found cheaper at the Kawaski dealers than what people are bidding for second hand ones - so its worth checking.
Reliability is brilliant. I've done over 35000 miles in two and a bit years now and the only thing thats gone wrong was a snapped clutch cable. Even with the broken clutch cable I managed to bang it into gear and clutchless change 200 miles home - it'll start in 1st gear and ride off with no clutch on level ground - amazing!
Obviously if you buying one of these check the usual things like blue exhaust smoke, water in the sump, overheating, and make sure things like head bearings and wheel bearings are sound. Exhaust down pipes will eventually rot through if you use it in winter - nothing else seems to corrode though. I'd recommend picking up a bargain stainless steel downpipes off ebay if you see one, as eventually you'll need it. My originial pipes rusted through after the second winter, when the bike was 6 year old, but the new stainless system off ebay will last forever I reckon

Buying Campers from Germany VW Campers Westfalia

Things to consider when buying a Campervan from Germany. If it is registered in Germany you will need the seller to arrange with you an Export license and plates this will allow you to easily register you van on arrival in the UK, without them it could take weeks or even months to get the vehicle registered in the UK, the cost is normally in the region of 120 Euros. If you buy from a dealer.. Germany laws stipulate that you are entitled to a 2 year European warranty, so be aware of "no warranty" sales from people who appear to be dealers.

Buying A Moped

When buying a moped its important to check for the following things:
Sellers history on ebay - check feedback
Size of engine
Stroke engine size
If the bike is registered in the UK and has relevant forms for registration (e.g, EEC, COC for if the bike is imported)
If the seller offers any warranty on the bike
If the bike can be insured in the UK, some sellers have details on the advert of insurance brokers that can insure the bike at a cheap cost.
I myself sell mopeds on Ebay and know what you should be looking out for when buying a moped.

Mitsubishi fault code reading

How to read and clear the fault codes on your Mitsubishi by Kerbsidemotors!Considering how complex some of their cars are, reading the fault codes on their cars is pretty easy! This method will work on all UK cars made before 1999. That includes Lancer Evolutions, Petrol Shoguns and L200s, Colts and Galants. It will probably work on imports too but I can't remember trying it! After 1999 Mitsubishi had to switch to the EOBD system to conform to European emmissions rules that have still not been put in place. Anyway, to the garage!Turn the ignition off.Earth out terminal 1 on the Data link connector. On Galants, Evos and stuff it is under the dash on the drivers side. A simple wire with a crocodile clip will do. Turn the ignition on. You don't need to start it up. Just until the lights come on.The Management light will start to flash. If there are no codes stored it will flash constantly. If there is a code stored, the light will flash irregularly, fast and slow. A long flash indicates 10 and a quick flash indicates one. So for example if the fault code 36 was stored the light would flash 3 long flashes then flash quickly 6 times. See, easy isn't it? If you do make an ars..make a mistake turn the ignition off. Disconnect the wire. Reconnect the wire and turn the ignition on again.Compare the fault code with the table below then fix as necessary. Remember, just because the code tells you the faulty component it doesn't mean the component is faulty. Check the connections at the component, check the wiring leading to it, battery terminals etc.

What car for under a grand ??

My job often means doing a high mileage. I spent a lot of time with nearly new cars, piling mileage onto them and watching the value plumet ! So, after a while I decided to buy "cheap" cars and run them till they die. However, that's the thing, I found that they just dont die !
Choices for this are limited. Think about it, you need comfort, reliability, economy. To get all three is difficult, so, if you, like me, get a mileage allowance say

BUYING A CHINESE MOTORBIKE,MONKEY GY200 THUMPSTAR,QUAD

This is a guide for anyone who is considering buying a Chinese motorbike or quad.
Chinese bikes and quads are a lot cheaper than their Japanese
equivalents, but their build quality and finish is not nearly as
good, and they often have design mistakes. If you enjoy
adjusting/checking things,and making the electrics work properly,you
are doing fairly low mileages, and you want the bike as a hobby, then go
for it.This is a generalisation, but all Chinese bikes are not the
same, and even one model (like the GY series) varies quite a lot between
different sellers in terms of quality and parts, which are often not
inter-changeable between different seller's bikes.If you buy from a
well known large dealer, whose prices are higher than other people's,the
bike will get a better check before you receive it,it'll be a bit
better built, and the after-sales will be better, but the same
fundamental problems will probably still arise.
Spare parts are generally cheap (not Thumpstars though, which are
expensive) but this is largely negated by the need to replace them
quite often, and more importantly by sellers' insistence on selling you
complete large assemblies instead of

I bought an Acer N35 for the sat.nav. system being a professional driver, and for a short time was happy enough with its performance, albeit sometimes slightly inaccurate information.
However, if you have one of these units, or are considering buying one, there is a major factor to be considered:-
When using the N35 Acer PDA, be aware that the 26pin connector at the bottom of the unit is very weak, and whilst using in accordance with Acer instructions i.e. use charger in car, it is liable to break off the connector. Similarly, be very gentle when

Stolen Corsa SRi Mirrors, Beware

Please note there are a rising number of stolen Corsa C (2003-2006) SRi mirrors appearing on ebay. Although very desirable, these mirrors are easily stolen with the right amount of brute force and are often easy to spot due to a number of suspicious signs:The mirrors come without base plates - Thieves often prise the main body of the mirror from the car as this is the quickest and easiest way to remove them. This sometimes causes damage to the body of the mirror as to remove them correctly, you need access to the inside of the car.Wires have been cut - This includes missing wiring and sometimes missing blocks and because the wiring is connected on the inside of the car, thieves snip or rip wires out to remove them quickly. Please remember suspicious adverts like these are often too good to be true and although they are quite hard to prove as stolen, anybody with a limited mechanical knowledge can remove them safely with base plates and wiring in tact.Base plates themselves are incredibly hard to come by and cost close to

Buying Car Air conditioning Receiver Driers

Basically: ONLY BUY NEW AND SEALED CAR RECEIVER DRIERS
Used car receiver driers keep coming up for sale in listings, These are no good, totally useless in fact. As soon as they are removed from the car they start absorbing moisture in the form of water vapor from the atmosphere. This floods the desiccants inside the unit quickly overwhelming the units ability to dry the refrigerant, an iriversable effect. Receivers are a filter just like any other and you would not fit a used oil or air

Service light reset on Volkswagen inc GOLF etc

There's no great ''trade secret'' as to how to reset the service indicator lamp on most VW's, simply refer to pages in the Owner's Handbook!
For reference of those interested in such matters, but who might not have access to an owner's manual, this is the procedure to follow:
Note: the Service Reminder Indicator displays 3 messages: OEL, IN 01, and IN 02. These display to alert the driver to follow the items listed under the manufacturer's service interval.
To reset the message displays, turn the ignition switch on. Press and hold the odometer reset button "A" located below the speedometer. Turn off the ignition while holding the button. "OEL" will display on the indicator. Press and hold the lower digital clock reset button "B" until five dashes appear in the display. If needed, press the odometer reset button until "IN 01" appears and then press the clock reset button until five dashes appear. If needed, press the odometer reset button until "IN 02" is displayed and then press the clock reset button until five dashes appear.
To exit reset mode, turn the ignition switch on and when "IN 01" appears, turn the ignition switch off.
On sum golfs you have to turn the milage odometer
To the best of my knowledge, the above service light reset procedure applicable to most Volkswagens
HOPE THIS SAVES YOU PAYING FOR INFORMATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

How to read

How to clear the fault codes on your Subaru including Legacys and ImprezasMost cars simply store fault codes and thats it. Subarus on the other hand have 2 modes. You can read the stored fault codes or you can check them while the car is driven. This is useful if you have a fault code that only appears when you drive and doesn't hang about long enough to be stored.Reading and clearing the codes themselves is pretty easy. This method should work on all Pre 1999 Subarus with proper ECUs (so if you have a 1978 Brat pick up you don't need to read any more!) After 1999 Subaru began using the EOBD system on their UK cars. I am not 100% sure if the imports after 1999 can still be read like this. No harm in trying I suppose! How to read the stored codes. Do this before you try the dynamic method.Turn the ignition offFind the diagnostic connectors. They are usually under the dash on the drivers side near the centre console. There should be a pair of black connectors (1), a pair of green (2)and a big yellow one (3 We don't need to worry about that!). You are looking for the black pair.Connect the black connectors together.Turn the ignition on but don't start it.Check the engine management light comes on. If it doesn't some snake in the grass has disconnected it! This happens because people are scared of having to take the car to the dealer to have it fixed!Count the number of flashes. Long flashes count for 10 and short ones are single units. So the code 38 would be 3 long flashes then 8 quick ones.If it just flashes long flashes continually there are no codes stored.Anyway, count the flashes and check against the list below.Turn the ignition back off then disconnect the black connectors. If you mess things up just disconnect the black connectors and start again.Fault codes1111

Motorcycle and Moped licence laws

Many people find the licence regulations confusing, so hopefully, this will help you figure out what you can ride, and what you need to do to ride the bike of your dreams.
First, a couple of definitions:-
Moped. This is a machine with a maximum speed limited to 50 kmh (approx 30mph) and no more than 50cc engine size.
Learner Legal 125cc This is a motorcycle or scooter with a maximum engine size of 125cc, limited to 14.6bhp or 11kw maximum power. (These are usually capable of about 65-70mph top speed, but must be able to reach at least 100kmh, or 63mph to be eligible for the standard Motorcycle Practical Test)
Compulsory Basic Training ( also known as CBT) This is the training course to get you started, and it includes lots of on-site training and at least 2 hours on-road tuition. You MUST do CBT before riding any Moped, Scooter or Motorcycle on the road. (The only exemption from CBT is Full Car licence holders who passed their car test before 1/2/2001, who can only ride a MOPED without CBT, but it's a really good idea to do it anyway!) Once you have completed CBT, the certificate is valid for 2 years, and if you haven't got a full licence by then, you will need to renew it.
Motorcycle Theory Test. This is in 2 parts,

chituma ctm125

Bought one of these Chituma CTM125 which was promptly delivered within 24hrs.
Put it all together OK. But would recommend to all that you use thread lock on engine mounts and foot pegs as vibration caused these to work loose on mine. A common minor problem is that the air breather cap on these doesnt always work. This will result in the bike running for 5-10mins then cutting out. Open fuel cap to release partial vacuum and the engine will restart. To cure this remove two screws from underside of fuel filler cap and increase the size of the breather vents on rubber moulding ( probally flashed over)Rear suspension is unadjustable and together with the narrow section foreign tyres make cornering interesting! Chrome plating is thin so keep it covered in WD40 to maintain appearance. Buy a HONDA CG125 manual as this will help greatly . On my model the carb' to engine bolts worked loose resulting in a air leak at the manifold causing idle speed to raise etc. Once this was found it was easy to fix, just tightened up with a 10mm spanner. Impressive for your money and will not require an MOT for three years. I sold mine after two weeks as I wanted something bigger

Owning a Toyota Previa/Estima/Lucida/Emina

This guide pertains to ONLY 1990 - 1999 models. The good pointsa. The wide body Previa is the most spacious MPV on the market without a doubt (and yes I have driven the Chrysler Grand Voyager and Kia Sedona)b. Very comfortable to drivec. Drive very well if looked after.d. These are back wheel drive so no CV joint/boot issues as with the other MPV's on the market. (although the independent suspension models do have rear CV boots but as these run in one plane of motion they are pretty durable.) Actually one exception to this is the 4x4 versions that have CV joints on the front driveshafts.e. On the 8 seaters the rear seats fold down into a double bed.....very cool (7 seater variants are a bit limited when the rear seats are up)f. With all seats occupied there is still plenty of luggage space in the boot.g. Because of the space between the rear most seats and the rear window your passengers will be unlikely to suffer head injury if you are rear ended. The bad points1. The Petrol versions are known to blow head gaskets although this is not that common and spares are readily available.2. The diesel versions are well known for cracking cylinder heads, this is an expense issue to have resolved and can cost upwards of

Everybody starts Ebay with Zero Feedback, remember?

Yes I know its obvious, but Zero feedback can be looked at from two different perpectives
1. If you have no feedback you want to gain feedback
2. If you are selling you dont want zero feedback bidders
Its catch 22 isnt it, yes

INTERNET STALKERS AND EBAY, SIGNS TO WATCH FOR

What a sad world it has become when an institution such as Ebay that was built on trust is becoming a victim of its own success and its members have to start watching out for these twisted individuals who are just hiding behind there computer screens abusing, threatening and trying to intimidate people they perceive to be successful or on the otherside of the coin vulnerable due to disability, race, religion, sex even age.
You may think me writing this as going against the advice I am going to offer you, Quite frankly it is, but the reason that I am doing this is because I am already being stalked so I would rather you benefit from my mistakes. So please read the guide, if it makes sense to you and you want to tweak a few things on your own Ebay page then that is great, if you are already clued up and have not made the mistakes I have then that is great also.
THE MINDSET OF A STALKER.
The individuals are usually lonely and have problems maintaining a relationship as their interpersonal skills are usually poor, they are usually fantasists and spend a lot of time daydreaming about how good they would be in the movies or as an action hero, thier computer is almost thier best mate and they may also have compulsive hobbies usually fed over the internet and ebay,

HOW NOT TO GET RIPPED OFF ON EBAY

We have all heard horror stories of people paying for items and never seeing them or their money again, this is in no way a dead cert to not getting conned but will help quite a few people.
This is very simple but very effective, once you have won the auction always fill in the "Request user information" form.
Ebay users have to register and keep up to date contact information, if they do not they will get suspended or banned from ebay.
This shows you how to check the users info, telephone number address etc, if it is not the same as the address you are supposed to send the money to or the telephone number is incorrect or not theirs then do not pay for your item until this is sorted, tell ebay immediatley as they can force the seller to update the information straight away.
This is easy to do:-
1)

DampCheck all the corners, bed boxes and roof lockers and cupboards for signs of damp. This can be done with a damp meter, available from DIY stores and could save you time and money. Check the grab handles and give them a hefty tug. If they appear to be loose, it

Peugeot / Citroen HDi - Potentially Expensive Problem

If you are considering a Peugeot or Citroen with the 2.2 HDi Diesel engine (or most other HDi models manufactured after around 2001) then you should know that these are fitted with a particulate filter (or FAP as it is sometimes referred)
